[Review] PBJ (Pure Blue Japan) XX-011 3-Years Selvedge Denim: Shaped by Time

Hello, this is  Lislab . While many brands are hailed as the pride of Japanese denim, PBJ(Pure Blue Japan) stands in a league of its own, solely due to its unparalleled fabric texture. Renowned for its signature "slubby" and rugged feel, PBJ is famous for maintaining this unique texture while employing distinctive construction methods that set it apart from standard denim. Today, I’m introducing the PBJ XX-011 , a model that utilizes Left-hand Twill(LHT) to offer both unique fading characteristics and a surprisingly comfortable fit. Let’s dive into the detailed data of how PBJ’s "blue obsession" has evolved after spending over three years with me. The Intersection of Washed & Black Denim: From Warehouse to Dickies (4 Pairs)

Hello, this is Lislab.

The stiff tension of raw denim is a unique joy, but some days I crave the soft, breezy feel of a perfectly executed wash or the sleek, heavy presence of black denim.

Today, I’m opening a specific chapter of my archive: two pairs of 'Washed Denim' and two pairs of 'Black Denim' that strike the ultimate balance between utility and heritage style.

01. Warehouse & Co. 1101
2nd Hand Line: Light Used Wash

"The pinnacle of vintage reproduction, physically compressing decades into a single pair."

  • Fit: Regular Straight – Standard rise with a straight leg line.

  • Condition: Light Used Wash / 1 year of wear / Zero washes.

  • Key Features:

    1. No Hemming Required: Designed for Asian proportions, providing a perfect break without tailoring.

    2. Ultimate Summer Denim: The 12oz fabric, thinned by the washing process, keeps you cool even in high summer.

    3. Incredible Comfort: A soft, broken-in feel that raw or one-wash models can never replicate.

When it comes to washed jeans, Warehouse’s '2nd Hand' line is arguably the undisputed king. Their ability to recreate a natural, "decades-worn" patina is legendary within the community. The 1101 model faithfully reproduces the iconic Levi’s 501 silhouette from the 1960s, just before the tapered trend took hold.

With its authentic button fly and vintage yellowish tint, it completes any outfit with just a simple white T-shirt.

02. Warehouse & Co. 1105
2nd Hand Line: Medium Used Wash

"A tapered fit that adds a touch of modern sophistication to the heritage mood."

  • Fit: Tapered Fit – Slightly lower rise than the 1101, narrowing toward the hem for a slimmer silhouette.

  • Condition: Medium Used Wash / 2 years of wear / 1 wash.

  • Key Features:

    1. Versatile All-Season Denim: The 12oz fabric and medium blue wash make it suitable for year-round styling.

    2. Modern Convenience: Features a zipper fly, reflecting late-60s utility for easier daily wear.

    3. Shoe Compatibility: The narrowed hem sits perfectly over loafers or slim sneakers.

While it might look like a twin to the 1101 at first glance, the 1105 is a different beast entirely. While the 1101 celebrates classic heritage, the 1105 leans into a more modern aesthetic.

It’s my go-to whenever I want reproduction details without the traditional 'dad-fit' bulk. It’s the perfect solution for a clean, sharp look that still honors denim history.

  • Fit: Classic Straight – A masculine line that drops straight from the hip to the hem.

  • Condition: 14oz Black Denim / 2 years of wear / 1 wash.

  • Key Features:

    1. Circle Curve Belt: Japan Blue’s signature curved waistband prevents gapping and provides an incredible fit.

    2. Solid 14oz Weight: A heavy, reliable feel that wraps around the body like a sturdy blanket.

    3. Deep Black Hue: A calm, sophisticated mood that promises beautiful grey-fading in the future.

The Circle line by Japan Blue never fails to impress me with its sheer comfort. I often find myself seriously considering adding the raw or washed versions of this same fit to my collection. Contrasting with the breezy feel of light washes, this 14oz black denim offers a grounded, heavy mood.

It’s a "denim-but-not-too-casual" powerhouse that shines when paired with formal shirts or knit cardigans. I'm currently keeping washes to a minimum to preserve that sharp, crisp silhouette.

04. Dickies Double Knee Carpenter Denim (Black)

"The ultimate 'battle-ready' denim, hiding practical value within a tough silhouette."

  • Fit: Loose Straight – The roomiest workwear silhouette in my collection.

  • Condition: Heavy-duty Black Denim / 6 months of wear / Zero washes.

  • Key Features:

    1. Double Knee: Layered fabric at the knees for a structured look and extreme durability.

    2. Thermal Utility: The 2-layer knee construction provides extra warmth during winter.

    3. Authentic Details: Hammer loops and tool pockets embody the rugged charm of carpenter pants.

This isn’t your standard Dickies 874 work pant; this is the denim iteration—tougher and grittier. While the J414 is a 'refined' black, this pair is 'rough' black. With its wide leg and long rise, the mobility is unparalleled.

It’s the pair I reach for on snowy or rainy days when I want something "battle-ready." Watching the grain of this denim slowly rough up with every wear is a genuine pleasure.

Closing : Which denim do you find yourself reaching for most often in your own closet?

Denim is a "record of time".

From the vintage-compressed world of Warehouse to the rugged, modern heritage of Dickies, these four pairs are more than just garments in my closet—they are the pillars of my daily life.

In a world of fleeting, shallow trends, there is a profound sense of security in a pair that fits your body and soul perfectly. I will be back with in-depth individual reviews for each of these pairs soon.

Thank you for reading this long journey.

Sincerely, Lislab
