[Review] SSC Napoli 22/23 Season Home Kim Min-jae Jersey: The Iconic No. 3 Blue Shirt That Won the Scudetto After 33 Years

Hello, this is Lislab . In Napoli, a passionate football city in southern Italy, there has long been one monumental name echoing as a legend: the iconic Diego Maradona. Ever since his era, Napoli had gone 33 long years without claiming the Italian league title (Scudetto), facing heartbreak time and time again. Then came South Korean defender Kim Min-jae. After playing in South Korea, China, and Turkey, he made his debut in Italy’s Serie A, completely dominating Napoli’s defense during the 22/23 season. Dubbed the "Korean Monster," he sparked an unforgettable turnaround. Dominating opposition attackers with his overwhelming physicality, impressive speed, and rock-solid defensive skills, Kim earned the Serie A Best Defender award and conquered the league. He anchored the squad to a miraculous season, ending a 33-year title drought. Today, I’m excited to introduce the shirt that shared every moment of that glorious journey: the SSC Napoli 22/23 Home Kit with Kim Min-jae No. 3...

[Review] Japan Blue Jeans J414 Circle Selvedge Black Denim: The Pinnacle of Black Denim

Hello, this is Lislab.

When people think of denim, the first things that usually come to mind are deep raw indigos, vibrant mid-blues, or crisp light-wash tones. However, when the seasons change, or depending on your mood, there are days when you want to exude a more muted, sophisticated vibe. When you want to strip away the inherent casualness of blue jeans and add a touch of sleek formality, the first place your hand reaches for is, without a doubt, a well-made pair of black denim.

The denim I am logging today comes from Japan Blue Jeans—a brand born in Kojima, Okayama, the holy land of denim. They have brilliantly fused traditional selvedge manufacturing techniques with modern ergonomic engineering.

Among their lineup, I would like to introduce you to the 'J414 Classic Straight Black Denim' from their signature 'CIRCLE' series, which has garnered immense praise from enthusiasts worldwide.

The most defining detail of the Japan Blue Jeans J414—and what sets it apart from other black jeans—is its incredibly deep, rich black color, paired with the ergonomically engineered 'Circle Curve Belt.' Unlike traditional jeans where the waistband is cut in a straight line, this pattern is uniquely curved to mimic the natural contours of the human pelvis.

Thanks to this design, it sits snugly against the lower back without any awkward gaping, providing an incredibly secure and comfortable fit. Turning the jeans over reveals the beautifully aging signature black leather patch and the clean white selvedge line that peeks out subtly when cuffed, creating a sharp contrast against the dark black fabric.

The hardware is also meticulously curated in a tone-on-tone colorway to preserve the sleek essence of black denim. Instead of flashy brass or silver, the rivets are finished with a matte black nickel plating for a cohesive look. It also utilizes a smooth, practical brass zipper fly, instantly giving the piece a modern, city-ready aesthetic that can easily swap in for a pair of dress slacks.

The beauty of these details shines through the hardware aging process. The black-coated rivets will slowly reveal glimpses of warm copper tones over time. Meanwhile, the brass gold zipper, which started with a bright metallic sheen, has naturally oxidized into a deep, muted bronze hue through exposure to air and friction over the years, adding a sublime layer of depth to the garment’s overall character.

02. Sizing

"Honest Measurements and Gaping-Free Proportions"

<J414 Circle Size Chart(One-Wash)>

* This data is a recompiled average by Lislab, based on Japan Blue Jeans official guides and measurement data from global premium denim retailers. Please note that denim may have slight individual variations; use these figures as a reference point for your size selection.

The Circle Line from Japan Blue Jeans is crafted from sanforized fabric and released as a finished One-Wash garment. Because of this, you don't have to stress about radical post-wash shrinkage. However, after trying them on in-person to account for the silhouette and minor fabric settling, I decided to go one size up from my standard 30 and selected a Size 31.

Unlike typical straight-cut waistbands that flare out at the back, the Circle Line’s three-dimensional pattern molds effortlessly around the hips. As you wear and move in them, the fabric breaks in beautifully to match your specific body shape. To clear the initial snugness of the 14oz high-density weave and the contour of the curved waistband, I highly recommend going 1 size up.

If you have a more athletic build with developed thighs or simply prefer a relaxed, vintage-leaning classic drape, going up 2 sizes or more would be a flawless choice.

03. Aging Data

"The Sleek and Weighty Allure of Black Denim"

lislab-japanbluejeans-j414-circle-black-selvedge-waist-measurement

These are the actual measurements after about 3 years of regular wear and a single, involuntary forced wash due to a spilled drink:

  • Waist: 42cm > 41.5cm (0.5cm decrease)

  • Front Rise: 30cm > 29.5cm (0.5cm decrease)

True to its sanforized, one-wash nature, the forced machine wash resulted in a negligible shift of just around 0.5cm in the waist and rise—completely avoiding any drastic shrinkage. Personally, to preserve the deep, ink-black tone as long as possible while letting the unique fading character mature naturally, I plan to wear them continuously without any additional washes for the foreseeable future.

While that unexpected first wash softened the 14oz high-density canvas slightly, the structural integrity of the J414 remains absolutely untouched. The classic straight silhouette still falls beautifully and vertically from the thigh to the hem, maintaining a rigid, architectural drape that flatters a slimmer body type with a solid, masculine weight.

Looking closely, the traces of a three-year journey are clearly visible. The whiskers forming along the lap, the honeycombs settling behind the knees, and the roping/atari along the chain-stitched hem have begun to fade into a soft, striking grey. Unlike the high-contrast pops of indigo fading, this slow, grayscale evolution delivers an understated elegance unique to black selvedge denim.

I treat these jeans as my ultimate sartorial cheat code for days when I want the comfort of denim but need to look sharp. Whether it’s a business meeting, a presentation, or a semi-formal family gathering, I layer the J414 under a crisp dress shirt or a neat cardigan as a total substitute for trousers. It retains the rugged soul of selvedge denim while offering the clean, tailored presentation of an all-black slack—making it arguably the most practical and versatile position in my entire denim collection.

Closing: The Alpha and Omega of Vintage Archive

In a fast-paced fashion landscape where trends disappear as quickly as they arrive, a pair of black denim that anchors your wardrobe with pure fabric weight and utilitarian construction becomes a partner you can unconditionally rely on.

What begins as a stiff, monolithic black silhouette gradually transforms into a mirror of your daily life and gait, rewarding you with a one-of-a-kind grey patina. This process is the ultimate romantic hobby shared among menswear enthusiasts who take pride in breaking in their own raw garments.

If you are looking to capture the clean formality of trousers alongside the raw grit of a selvedge jean, or if you are simply hunting for a black denim that perfectly locks around your waist without gaping, I highly urge you to take your first steps with Japan Blue Jeans' J414 Circle Line.
Thank you for reading this long journey.

Sincerely, Lislab
