But occasionally, I want to step away from the classic feel of blue denim to craft a outfit that is either neatly tailored, quiet, or subtly hip.

When I first considered adding the Japan Blue Jeans J414 to my wardrobe, I already had plenty of indigo and light-wash jeans. What I really needed was a refined pair of black selvedge jeans that could seamlessly double as trousers for formal meetings or quieter occasions.

I visited a specialized denim retailer searching for a pair that wasn't overly tight, draped naturally, and retained the raw charm of selvedge denim while still fitting into a polished aesthetic. I tried on several black denim options recommended at the store, but most leaned too heavily into either rugged workwear or artificial black slacks. Then I tried on the J414, and the moment I stepped into them, I knew: "Ah, this is the one."









The clean, structured silhouette—reminiscent of the Fullcount 1101 I frequently wear, but rendered in a deep, dark black wash—instantly captured my heart.

For those with a slimmer build like mine, there’s often a fear that straight-fit jeans with wider leg openings might float around and make the lower body look underwhelmed. However, the silhouette created by the J414 perfectly balances a refined look with a hip, modern drape.

Thanks to the 'Circle Curved' waistband, which is cut in a curved pattern to contour the hips, the back of the waist never gaps or flares out. It sits snugly over the hips, delivering an exceptionally stable and comfortable fit every single time.





02. Hemming Tips & Styling Points





The J414 also came with an uncompromisingly long inseam that required custom hemming. I briefly considered wearing them rolled up, but to achieve the neat, tailored look I originally purchased them for, I ultimately had them hemmed so they drop cleanly in a straight vertical line, resting gently over the bridge of my shoes.

Thanks to the precise, tailored length, the lower body anchor feels solid and balanced no matter what tops or shoes I pair with them.

The deep, rich all-black tone brings a sense of composure, making these jeans an excellent substitute for slacks under a crisp shirt or cardigan for formal meetings or dinners. Conversely, on relaxed weekends, throwing on an oversized hoodie or a sports jersey while casually cuffing the hem once to reveal the white selvedge ID creates an effortlessly hip, casual outfit.





03. A Continuum of Records





One of the true joys of weaving these jeans into my daily outfits over time is noticing how the denim molds to my body, while my body simultaneously adapts to the specific cut and feel of the jeans.

Furthermore, as I move around, the subtle grey fading emerging around the lap and knees reveals a heavy, understated charm unique to monochromatic selvedge—quite distinct from the vibrant fade of indigo.
