[Review] Freak's Store M-65 Fishtail Parka: Sizing Tips & A Complete Guide to Entry-Level Military Outerwear

Hello, this is Lislab.

As the seasons change and mornings become crisper, deciding on an everyday jacket often brings us right back to the timeless military parka.

From high-end reproduction brands that painstakingly recreate original military archives to genuine vintage pieces, the market is filled with M-65 fishtail parkas. However, finding an accessible, comfortable entry-level option for daily wear is harder than it seems.

That is how I discovered the fishtail parka from Freak's Store, a brand offering a well-crafted M-65 experience at a far more approachable price point. Founded in Japan in 1986, Freak's Store is a prominent select shop known for proposing casual, lifestyle-driven menswear centered around classic American casual style.

Today, I’d like to introduce the Freak's Store M-65 Fishtail Parka—a ideal choice for anyone looking to enjoy classic military style without the heavy cost of vintage originals or high-end reproductions.

The biggest draw of the M-65 fishtail parka—just like its original counterpart—is its versatile liner-set construction.

While many brands reinterpret the M-65 archive using their own design languages, Freak's Store has packed an impressive amount of detail into this parka given its accessible price point.

Instead of the stiff, rough texture found on vintage military originals, the outer shell fabric is smooth, soft, and cozy. It drapes naturally over everyday clothes to create a clean yet beautifully boxy shape.

The included quilted liner is equally well-made, looking solid enough to wear on its own as a lightweight jacket during transitional weather.

My favorite detail is the interior button loop inside the liner sleeves. On many other M-65 liners, the wrist attachment tabs dangle awkwardly when worn alone, but Freak's Store included an internal button to keep those tabs neatly secured. This user-friendly touch makes the liner a truly standalone piece.

02. Sizing

"Why You Should Consider Sizing Down 2 Sizes"

<Freak's Store M-65 Fishtail Parka Size Chart>

* This data is a recompiled average by Lislab, based on Freak's Store official guides and measurement data. Please use these figures as a reference point for your size selection.

At 171 cm and 61 kg, I typically wear a size M to L (95–100) for standard outerwear. However, when purchasing this M-65, I selected the smallest size: S.

The consensus among buyers was overwhelmingly clear: "This runs extremely large, so downsize by at least 1 to 2 sizes."

At first, I hesitated, wondering if an S might be too small for an outerwear piece. But reviewing feedback from buyers with similar builds who chose M or L revealed a pattern: almost all of them ended up reselling the jacket because the volume was simply overwhelming.

While fit preferences vary, if you prefer a clean, well-balanced silhouette, I strongly recommend downsizing by 2 sizes. If you plan to layer thick hoodies underneath or prefer an exaggerated oversized look, downsizing by 1 size or staying true-to-size would be the better route.

* Size F is designed for women under 165 cm. Compared to size S, it features shorter sleeves and a wider body, which may make the arms feel relatively short.

03. Fit

"The Gold Standard of Oversized Silhouette"

When the jacket arrived and I tried it on, size S delivered a beautifully voluminous A-line silhouette on my frame. The chest and hem flare out generously, while the sleeves land right at the back of my hands for a relaxed, natural drop.

When reaching forward or raising my arms, the sleeves pull back slightly, but had I chosen a size M, the entire frame and sleeve length would have swallowed me completely.

The liner alone works wonderfully during chilly fall mornings. Its heat retention and construction exceeded my expectations; when combined with the outer shell, it easily handles typical winter days short of extreme cold spells.

If I had to point out one minor flaw when wearing the liner standalone, it is that the front button placket sits slightly off-center. When left unbuttoned, this creates a subtle visual asymmetry.

Closing: The Appeal of an Accessible M-65 Archive

The Freak's Store M-65 Fishtail Parka Liner Set is a fantastic entry point for anyone stepping into military outerwear for the first time.

While it softens the rough, raw edge of authentic military issue gear, it makes up for it with an approachable price point, soft fabric texture, and thoughtful design features.

For those looking to enjoy versatile layered parka styles across fall, winter, and spring, I recommend this piece without hesitation.

I will continue to document how this parka integrates into my daily outfits right here on the blog.

Thank you for reading this long journey.

Sincerely, Lislab
