Among the countless brands that define workwear history, Carhartt stands tall. Starting as heavy-duty work clothes for American laborers, it has grown over 130 years into a legendary brand that bridges street fashion and heritage style.

At the heart of Carhartt’s lineup is its signature short jacket: the Detroit Jacket. Known for its rugged yet clean short-length profile, it remains a beloved classic worldwide.

Instead of the polished, pre-washed finish of the Carhartt WIP line, I chose the Carhartt US Original Detroit Jacket in Carhartt Brown to experience raw, unwashed utility fabric and create my own fading process over time. Here is my detailed review.

The Detroit Jacket, with its wind-blocking corduroy collar, zippered chest pocket, and rugged canvas, has protected workers and street icons for decades.









The first thing that stands out is the iconic Carhartt Brown color—a vibrant, warm orange-brown hue rather than a dull brown.







Though crafted from heavy, stiff duck canvas, the bi-swing back pleated shoulder design allows effortless arm movement. Triple-needle stitching along main stress points delivers that unmistakable workwear toughness.

Before buying, I debated between the US Original Line and the WIP Line. While Carhartt WIP offers modern cuts, washed fabrics, and contemporary styling, the US Original line delivers raw, authentic workwear heritage at an accessible price point.

I chose the US Original version because I wanted a completely raw jacket that ages naturally with my daily wear.





02. Sizing

I am 171 cm tall and weigh 61 kg, usually wearing medium to large (M–L) in outerwear. However, for the Carhartt US Detroit Jacket, I selected a Size S.

Because the US Original line is engineered for American workwear layering and broader body proportions, even people taller and larger than me frequently wear Size S. While the chest width is comfortable, many reviews highlight that the sleeve length runs quite long.

After carefully choosing between S and M, Size S proved to be the perfect choice. The sleeves are slightly long, but it layers comfortably over a heavy hoodie or denim jacket without feeling restrictive.

If you want a relaxed, traditional workwear silhouette, consider sizing down by 1 size. If you prefer a more structured, tailored fit, consider sizing down by 2 sizes based on exact measurements.





03. Fit

The heavyweight duck canvas feels sturdy and substantial on the body. Despite its initial stiffness, the shoulder pleats and ergonomic cuts provide great mobility when lifting your arms.









The warm, rich Carhartt Brown tone instantly elevates any outfit. I currently wear the sleeves cuffed once, and the stiff canvas holds the roll-up shape firmly.







I plan to wear this jacket unwashed for a while to let the fabric break in naturally. I am looking forward to seeing the canvas soften and develop unique creases and color fading over time.
