[Style] PBJ(Pure Blue Japan) XX-011 Selvedge Denim: 4-Year Review & Styling a Rough Yet Soft Pair of Jeans

Among denim enthusiasts, PBJ(Pure Blue Japan)—one of the prominent standard-bearers from Kojima, Okayama—is world-renowned for its distinctively rough, slubby fabric texture and unparalleled indigo dyeing mastery.

While most standard jeans are crafted with Right-Hand Twill fabric where the weave runs diagonally to the upper right, the XX-011 model I chose stands out because it is woven with Left-Hand Twill fabric, flowing to the upper left.

Left-Hand Twill fabric not only breaks in beautifully, becoming incredibly soft and contouring to your body with wear, but it also creates a striking vertical fading pattern during the aging process—reminiscent of rain falling straight from the sky.

Today, I’m excited to share my 4-year review of the PBJ XX-011, a pair that perfectly balances a sophisticated silhouette with a rough, heavy-textured canvas defined by unique Left-Hand Twill vertical fading.

01. On-Body Fit & Silhouette





I still vividly remember staying up all night searching for these jeans after catching a glimpse of their faded look on a denim forum, wondering, "What on earth is this pair?" I fell head over heels at first sight for the sleek silhouette that fits my personal style perfectly, the unique fading I’ve never seen anywhere else, and the signature leaf embroidery on the back pocket.

Because this model is inherently slim and runs quite small, I initially ordered a size 31, only to exchange it for a size 32 after a bit of trial and error. 02. Hemming & Styling Points





As any denim lover will agree, cutting away the original chain-stitched hem and losing the established wash lines for a hem alteration is always a agonizing dilemma. At first, I tried to make it work by cuffing them without any alterations. However, to stay true to the clean, sharp nature of the slim tapered fit and tackle the unforgiving outseam length, I eventually took the plunge and decided to get them hemmed to my actual proportions.

After wearing them and letting the creases naturally settle for about 3 to 4 months, I had them hemmed following the first two washes—once the fabric had fully stabilized. The hem was cut to gracefully graze the top of my instep and fall right at the edge of my heel, which effortlessly maximized the sharp, streamlined line inherent to the slim tapered fit.



* Hemming Tip: PBJ XX-011 finished with a Chain Stitch. To preserve the unique roping effect and twisting characteristic of vintage denim, I highly recommend using a professional shop capable of chain stitching rather than a standard single-stitch repair.







Thanks to the sleek sharpness of the tapered fit, these jeans pair beautifully with lightweight canvas shoes or low-top sneakers. Since the leg opening narrows subtly without feeling restrictive, they can easily accommodate sleeker, low-profile athletic shoes quite well.

While maintaining a clean, versatile silhouette that works with almost any top, the rich depth of the indigo and the rugged texture allow this pair to act as an all-around wardrobe MVP—effortlessly bridging the gap between a simple t-shirt, a heritage look, and modern streetwear.
