[Review] LVC 1955 501(55501) Rigid Selvedge Raw denim: The Heritage of Levi’s, The Definitive Wide-Leg Denim

Hello, this is Lislab.

When you dive deep into the profound world of denim and explore countless brands, you eventually face the timeless maxim: "All roads lead to Levi’s."

Since the "original" that many famous reproduction brands strive to replicate is ultimately the Levi’s of yesteryear, Levi’s itself established its high-end line—LVC (Levi's Vintage Clothing)—to faithfully reproduce its own most glorious golden eras.

It might sound ironic for the original to replicate itself, but there is a clear reason why so many brands and denim enthusiasts recognize the design, durability, and fabric of that vintage era, still chasing its nostalgia today.

Among their lineup, the LVC model I am archiving today is the 1955 501 (55501), an iconic 1950s representation and one of LVC's all-time bestsellers. Let's dive in.

  • Fit: Wide Straight – A deep rise with a rugged, straight silhouette dropping all the way to the hem
  • Condition: Worn less than 20 times / 2 Soakings (1 initial soak + 1 wash)
  • Features: Deep, authentic Levi’s original indigo with a signature hairy texture
    • 12oz Rigid unsanforized raw denim, which undergoes dramatic shrinkage upon the first wash
    • The iconic 1950s biker culture "Anti-Fit" silhouette and the hidden rivet construction on the back pockets, replicating the transition era from leather to paper patches
    • LVC paper patch, two-sided "Big E" red tab, brass rivets, original button fly, signature Levi's arcuate stitching on back pockets, and red selvedge ID line

When untouched and unwashed, the initial raw texture of the Rigid fabric felt less like clothing and more like a stiff cardboard box. When I first tried it on, it gave me a truly unique sense of density, wrapping around my body like folding corrugated cardboard.

Now, after finishing the soaking process to shrink it perfectly to my frame, the signature hairiness of LVC combined with the generous silhouette of the 55501 delivers an incredibly satisfying, "This is the true original" wearing experience.

Unlike other models featuring leather patches, the 55501's hallmark paper patch, the bold arcuate back pocket stitching, and LVC’s exclusive "Big E" red tab (LEVIS, not LeVIS) are the exact, standalone details that drive denimheads worldwide crazy for Levi's vintage precision.

As the absolute pinnacle of original denim, the quality of every single piece of hardware is on another level. Although I haven't worn it many times, the brass rivets and vintage silver button fly have already begun to oxidize over the years, effortlessly exuding an authentic, time-worn aura.

From the honest layout of the coin pocket to the hidden rivets and the unseen interior pocket stamps—these obsessive details from Levi’s are more than enough to ignite any collector's desire.

02. Sizing & Shrink-to-Fit (STF)

"The Tear-Jerking Soaking Process and Honest Measurements"

<LVC 55501 Rigid Size Chart>

* This data is a recompiled average by Lislab, based on Levi's official guides and measurement data from global premium denim retailers. Please note that raw denim may have slight individual variations; use these figures as a reference point for your size selection.

LVC Rigid models are completely unprocessed, raw denim, they undergo immense shrinkage during the first wash. Knowing this dramatic shrink-to-fit (STF) ratio, I boldly went with a 32/32 while my true waist size is 30.

Back in my early days into denim, lacking sufficient information, I relied purely on the romance of "molding a pair to my own body." I filled a washbasin with lukewarm water and submerged the jeans. To keep the fabric from floating, I even went through the painful yet passionate process of weighing it down with plastic PET bottles filled with water.

However, contrary to my expectations, they didn't seem to shrink as much as I hoped. Driven by pure obsession to make the waist and length fit perfectly, I took a gamble and threw them into the washing machine for an additional cold wash.

Fortunately, after these two rounds, the waist settled perfectly into a comfortable 30-inch fit, and the length dialed in flawlessly to my frame.

Since everyone has a different body shape and leg length, buying a Rigid model that requires an absolute soaking process can feel like a gamble. I highly recommend sizing up at least 2 to 3 inches from your true size, while carefully calculating the length.

Given the opportunity in the future, I plan to acquire another LVC Rigid model and share a detailed step-by-step soaking guide.

*If you wish to avoid this inconvenient and complicated shrinkage process, I strongly recommend purchasing a 'Rinsed' or 'One-wash' model, which has already been pre-washed at the factory to lock in the shrinkage.

03. Aging Data

"A Rugged and Generous Silhouette That Matures with Time"

lislab-lvc-55501-selvedge-rigid-waist-measurement

These are the actual measurement changes after one soak and one cold wash (two shrinkage cycles total):

  • Waist: 42cm > 38.5cm (3.5cm decrease)

  • Front Rise: 31.5cm > 29.5cm (2cm decrease)

  • Total Length: (Additional update pending)

Although the overall dimensions shranked down nicely to fit my spec, the inherent wide-leg regular straight profile of the 1955 model means it still drapes quite loosely and generously on a slim build like mine.

In fact, when worn, the silhouette and leg opening fall with a much more relaxed, loose break compared to the Fullcount 1101—another relaxed-fit reproduction denim in my collection. Unlike the sharp, clean lines given by the slim straight or slim tapered fits I frequently wear these days, the 55501 projects a distinct, heavy workwear aura that roots the lower body in rugged character.

For someone like me who mostly wore slim-fitting trousers, the deep rise and wide leg felt unfamiliar at first. Yet, on days when I specifically crave that vintage vibe, it has a strange charm that makes me pick it up without a second thought.

As the epitome of original denim, this pair brings a comforting sense of heritage to my collection just by hanging in the closet.

Admittedly, with my slim frame, it's difficult to carve razor-sharp, high-contrast fading creases into this roomy fabric, so I cannot run them as a daily "beater." However, I am planning a new journey to acquire a slightly slimmer LVC model soon to aggressively age it and create my own personal fading data.

Closing: The Alpha and Omega of Vintage Archive

We live in an era where fashion items have expiration dates and are consumed at a breakneck pace. Yet, raw denim stands out as one of the very few categories that actually grows more valuable as time passes.

Some people might look at the act of manually treating, soaking, and breaking in a stiff pair of unwashed raw denim and ask, "Why go through all that trouble just to wear pants?"

But a pair of jeans that isn't abandoned after a single season—one that stays with you for years, archiving your time and memories—is far more than a simple purchase. It is a romantic process of gaining a lifelong companion that shares your personal taste.

If you want to experience a solid aura and a relaxed silhouette completely unbothered by the speed of modern trends, I gently suggest taking your first step with the 55501, which perfectly preserves the grand heritage of the 1950s.
Thank you for reading this long journey.

Sincerely, Lislab
