Hello, this is Lislab.
Today’s heritage item is the Traveler's Notebook (TN), a leather journal that truly "ripens" at your fingertips.
In this digital age, managing schedules via smartphones or PCs has become the norm. However, having loved planning and recording since childhood, I still stick to the analog way—writing by hand. The habit of reflecting while physically putting pen to paper is a vital pillar of my life.
I’d like to introduce you to the companion that has shared the start and end of my daily routine for years—the very one featured in my profile picture across various Lislab posts.
01. Product Details
"A Soul for the Traveler, Crafted in Leather"
The Traveler's Notebook is a masterpiece combining a high-quality, thick cowhide cover made in Chiang Mai, Thailand with premium paper from Japan’s 'Midori'.
* Don't throw away the spare rubber band included in the packaging! It's designed to be reused as a 'Leather Tension Band' for the exterior.
The true value of this notebook lies in its 'incompleteness.' When first purchased, it is merely a rugged piece of leather. But as it absorbs the user's hand oils, time and personal taste, it evolves into a one-of-a-kind personal archive.
The starter kit includes a leather cover, a blank refill and a spare rubber band. From there, the fun begins as you "build up" your own unique tool by adding various refills and accessories.
"Infinite Expandability"
The charm of this notebook is its limitless versatility. By layering different types of refills, you can manage work, daily life, notes and sketches all in one place.
Unlike traditional diaries that you must replace every year, with a TN, you simply swap out the paper refills while keeping the same leather cover. The used refills can then be archived, creating a beautiful physical history of your life.
By using connecting rubber bands, you can bundle up to three refills. The exterior bands are also available in various colors for further customization.
Through combinations with Traveler's Company brass accessories (charms, clips, pens, etc.) and Traveler's Factory exclusives (silver charms, inner pouches), the leather softens and the brass oxidizes. This creates a stunning vintage patina that reaches its peak as you spend more time with it.
03. Aging Data and Size Recommendations
"The Evolution of Leather and Brass"
Leather is honest. It keeps every scratch and preserves every mark from the sweat of your palms. While some prefer meticulous care with leather essences, I love the natural aging that occurs simply through daily use—letting it grow old alongside me.
I currently use two main notebooks, one for daily life and one for work. I am also planning a new business venture, so I intend to add a third to my rotation soon. Even with multiple units, I customize each with different refills and charms, carrying them every single day to engrave my time and records within them.
* I also own a Passport size, which I currently use as an actual passport cover for travel.
Sizing Tip:
- Passport Size: Ideal for use as a passport cover or a compact EDC (Every Day Carry) memo pad. Choose this if you prioritize portability.
- Original Size: My strongest recommendation for those planning to use it as a full-scale diary or for professional work records.
The only differences between the sizes are the refills and size-specific accessories (connecting bands, pouches). The core experience and accessories like charms, clips, and pens remain consistent, so the choice ultimately depends on your lifestyle.
Closing: Recording that Turns Daily Life into a Journey
Though we live in a digital-dominated world, the act of picking up a pen and filling paper with the rhythmic sound of writing provides a unique sanctuary for the mind.
The Traveler's Notebook is more than just a notepad or a diary. It is a magical item that turns your everyday life into a journey. I highly recommend it to those who want a companion that ages with them, rather than searching for a new diary every year.
Thank you for reading this long journey.
Sincerely, Lislab
* P.S. I currently own siz Original sizes (Standard, Tokyo, Kyoto, Diner, Moomin and T.S.L Custom Edition) and one Passport size (Narita Airport Edition). Each has its own distinct allure and I Plan to share a detailed analysis of each edition in future posts.
